******************* About Dawn Stansfield Dawn Stansfield is an excellent interviewer. She is precisely the type of journalist of which the world desperately needs more. One of the threads which I recognise runs through my work is a criticism of today’s journals and journalists, in whichever medium. Most hacks today are that: irresponsibly shallow, trivialising of the complex, condescending to their audience, concerned considerably more with self-aggrandizement than veracity, and to those they are interviewing either gooily sycophantic or fascistically aggressive. Always it is the truth which is the victim. If my experience of being interviewed by Dawn is typical (and I have no reason at all to suppose it wasn’t), then she avoids all these pitfalls – indeed exemplifies the other (and very much healthier) side of the coin.Here I must interject a confession: Dawn liked my book. And now a name-dropping alert!!! Way back when, when God was a child, I had the enormous privilege of working with that doyen of classical actors, John Gielgud. I overheard a conversation he was having with Ralph Richardson. They were talking of critics. “Let’s face it, Ralph,” said Sir John, with that enormously endearing humility of his, “we like those who like us.” Apart from the opportunity that anecdote affords me to drop two rather prestigious names, it also does articulate both a truism and a truth which it behoves me to acknowledge publicly. But it is far from being the whole story. I am not by inclination a good interviewee. It is probably for precisely that reason that I am not overly fond of the sport. My work, however, has required of me that I indulge in it and, my reticence notwithstanding, I have therefore – perforce – had a deal of experience of it. I cannot remember an occasion when I was asked to go deeper into myself than I was by Dawn, nor when I was enjoined – through a technique as skilful as it was subtle – to express myself with such openness and candour. A very large part of that technique is simple conscientiousness: Dawn had done her homework, had read and considered the book, had visited my web-site. And that is a commitment not lightly brushed aside: Overwhelmingly the majority of journalists interviewing authors have not read the book in question. If anyone has, it will be the interviewer’s researchers. And the questions posed are therefore drip-fed, superficial and incapable of follow-ups. This finally does no-one any service, least of all the listener/reader/viewer. As is so often the case today, it is us the consumer/client/customer who suffer. S/he has a right to expect that his or her investment is reciprocated – by both interviewer and interviewee.It is way past time that those in control of the media woke up to the fact that we need more Dawn Stansfields on our air-waves (and in our press), and far fewer David Frosts, David Lettermans or Larry Kings – and absolutely no Jerry Springers.
